Digital Transformation Myths and Trends in 2018

You have been hearing about Fourth Industrial Revolution. It’s probably the hottest topic for businesses, thought leaders, policymakers, scientists and of course technocrats.

Klaus Schwab, the Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, who coined this term, writes – “The First Industrial Revolution used water and steam power to mechanize production. The Second used electric power to create the mass production. The Third used electronics and information technology to automate production. Now a Fourth Industrial Revolution is building on the Third, the digital revolution that has been occurring since the middle of the last century. It is characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres.”

He makes a very important, pertinent point – “Neither technology nor the disruption that comes with it is an exogenous force over which humans have no control. All of us are responsible for guiding its evolution, in the decisions we make on a daily basis as citizens, consumers, and investors.”

While Digital Transformation as a term is still misunderstood, today, digital transformation as a business imperative is widely agreed upon. What then is a digital transformation in practice? Is it an IT project? Or the introduction of a few cool tools in the company? Or the addition of a mobility is driven customer relationship management (CRM) initiative to engage customers better?

As an organization, if you are looking to embark on the digital transformation journey or trying to stay away from it, there are still a few myths around digital transformation that you need to steer clear of. Digital Pianos – Which Brand Should I Buy?

Ok, you want to buy a digital piano. You have visited lots of music shops and tried lots of digital pianos out. You have been given lots of conflicting advice and don’t know what to do!

This is sadly what many shoppers experience when they want to buy a digital piano and they go to their
local piano shop armed with a few print outs from the internet but not enough knowledge or the right advice to make an informed decision.

You enter your local piano shop and are confronted with lots of digital pianos, different styles, colours, shapes. Some digital pianos have a few buttons, some hundreds of buttons and flashing lights – HELP!!!
You want some advice but unfortunately the advice you will get from the salesman will always favour the shops’ profit over yourself.

You visit one piano shop and they recommend the Roland digital piano – “it is the best digital piano around by far, amazing sounds and it plays and feels just like a real piano” they say.
You say “What about the Yamaha, I have heard that it is a very good piano as well?”
They say “No, the Roland digital piano is far better than the Yamaha”. They then sit down and play
the Yamaha and then the Roland and convince you that the Roland digital piano is definitely far better than the Yamaha.
Why do piano shops always try to push a particular model or a particular brand?
Well the reason behind this is that they are either eager to get rid of a model or they are
simply making more money on one brand than they are the other.

You trot off to another piano shop to get some more advice and to compare prices. Again you walk in
and you are confronted by a similar set up. The salesman, like before, shows you the different digital pianos
and advises you that the Casio is the best digital piano and not the Yamaha, and certainly not the Roland. The Roland digital piano is way over priced!
You explain that you have just been to another piano shop and were told that the Roland digital piano is better than the Yamaha, and the Casio is nowhere near as good. “They don’t know what they are talking about” the salesman says. Now you are utterly confused and walk out of the shop a little angry.

Innovation is not necessarily the time saver and the great simplifier people try to make it out to be.

Take for example the picture frame and the gradual conversion to the digital frame, and the added complications it has added to our lives.

Tip #1: How to Get the Best Prices on Digital Cameras

Wherever you are in the investigation/buying process, eventually you get to this step. If you want to buy a digital camera, the best prices are on the internet. Whether you’ve purchased anything on the internet or not, there are certain INTERNET BUYING STRATEGIES that will save you money, time, and aggravation.

  • When purchasing ANYTHING through the internet, only consider the ENTIRE cost of the “digital camera + tax + shipping,” NOT just the price of the digital camera. This is the only way to compare “apples to apples.”
  • Once you find the best ENTIRE cost, do not immediately buy it from that vendor! There are key INTERNET questions to answer:
  • Is the digital camera in stock? There is often a mysterious correlation between the cheapest digital camera prices and cameras being OUT OF STOCK. You don’t want to order your digital camera and then have it sit on backorder for 3 months, do you?
  • Does your Nikon (Minolta, Canon, etc.) come with a USA warranty or is it what’s called “grey goods?” You want to verify it’s a USA warranty, unless you don’t mind having to service it internationally. If it’s grey goods, you WILL NOT be able to service it in the US.
  • When ordering your digital baby, beware of costly add-on accessories that may be needed eventually, but are suggested during this “special order promotion time” at 200% of the normal price.

Tip #2: Professional or Prosumer… Which is Right For You?

Let’s begin by clarifying our terms. A professional digital camera is a digital SLR, while a prosumer is basically everything else. In that context, as of the end of 2005, digital SLRs could be purchased for $600 – $8,000 (Canon and Nikon, at least). The key points to consider are:

  1. If you plan on shooting night photos or other pictures in low-light situations, many prosumer digital cameras take good quality photographs at ISO 100 or 200. However, to take good pictures in lower light at ISO 400 or 800 will typically require a digital SLR. Otherwise, digital “noise” will probably have too large an impact on picture quality.
  2. If you plan on taking flash photographs at distances greater than 10-12 feet from your subject, an external flash unit needs to be used. And the only way an external flash unit can be used with your digital camera is to attach it to your camera’s hot shoe. Every professional digital camera has a hot shoe. Many prosumers also do, but NOT ALL OF THEM.
  3. Salespeople often try to sway consumers away from professional digital cameras into prosumer models, saying that the digital SLRs have so many complicated features that they are difficult to use. That is only half correct. Digital SLRs are typically designed to allow consumers to take pictures easily using the more automatic settings OR to use the advanced features when they are comfortable doing so.

Publishing And Digital And Electronic Rights

The following publishing industry article addresses some of the legal issues arising for publishing lawyers, entertainment attorneys, authors, and others as a result of the prevalence of e-mail, the Internet, and so-called “digital” and “electronic publishing”. As usual, publishing law generally and the law of the digital right and electronic right specifically, governing these commercial activities, has been slow to catch up to the activity itself. Yet most of the publishing industry “gray areas” can be resolved by imposing old common-sense interpretations upon new publishing lawyer and entertainment lawyer industry constructs, including the digital right and electronic right, and others. And if after reviewing this article you believe you have a non-jargonized handle on the distinction between “digital right” and “electronic right” in the publishing context, then I look forward to hearing from you and reading your article, too.

1. “Electronic Right[s]” And “Digital Right[s]” Are Not Self-Defining.

All publishing lawyers, entertainment attorneys, authors, and others must be very careful about the use of jargon – publishing industry jargon, or otherwise. Electronic and digital publishing is a recent phenomenon. Although as a publishing lawyer and entertainment attorney and unlike some others, I tend to use the phrase “electronic right” or even “digital right” in the singular number, there probably tends to be no single consensus as to what constitutes and collectively comprises the singular “electronic right” or “digital right”. There has not been sufficient time for the publishing, media, or entertainment industries to fully crystallize accurate and complete definitions of phrases like “electronic publishing”, “web publishing”, “electronic right[s]”, “e-rights”, “digital rights”, or “first electronic rights”.

These phrases are therefore usually just assumed or, worse yet, just plain fudged. Anyone who suggests that these phrases alone are already self-defining, would be wrong.

Accordingly, anyone, including a publishing lawyer or paralegal representing a book publisher or entertainment lawyer representing a studio or producer, who says that an author should do – or not do – something in the realm of the “electronic right” or “digital right” because it is “industry-standard”, should automatically be treated with suspicion and skepticism.

The fact of the matter is, this is a great era for authors as well as author-side publishing lawyers and entertainment attorneys, and they should seize the moment. The fact that “industry-standard” definitions of the electronic right and digital right have yet to fully crystallize, (if indeed they ever do), means that authors and author-side publishing lawyers and entertainment attorneys can take advantage of this moment in history.

Of course, authors can also be taken advantage of, too – particularly those not represented by a publishing lawyer or entertainment attorney. There is a long and unfortunate history of that happening, well prior to the advent of the electronic right and digital right. It has probably happened since the days of the Gutenberg Press.

Every author should be represented by a publishing lawyer, entertainment attorney, or other counsel before signing any publishing or other agreement, provided that their own economic resources will allow it. (But I am admittedly biased in that regard). Part of the publishing lawyer and entertainment attorney’s function in representing the author, is to tease apart the different strands that collectively comprise the electronic right or digital right. This must be done with updated reference to current technology. If your advisor on this point is instead a family member with a Smith-Corona cartridge typewriter or a Commodore PET, rather than an entertainment attorney or publishing lawyer, then it may be time to seek a new advisor.

Digital Approach – Way Ahead

We have been talking about digital journey. Old uncertain approaches won’t deliver; you need absolute clarity about digital’s demands, customer’s digital vision, strong leadership and unparalleled agility. If there is one theme I hear consistently it’s that consumers expect the brands they engage with to provide a flawless digital experience in their interactions. That’s applicable to all type of industry, be it retail, information technology or some other and all has their own way of defining digital experience.

I have witnessed recently few stores in my locality, one was going out of business (Toys”R”Us) and other was heading towards transformation (Target) with new consumer experience. Reason for out of business could be different but mostly, companies born before the digital age must substantially transform in order to remain relevant and which starts from digitally transform small business processes which are key consumer experience.

We know this from experience, on average, resources don’t move between business units in large organizations. And this holds doubly true for digital approach, which demands special attention. Project Managers in many organizations lack clarity on what “digital” means for approach. They underestimate the degree to which digital is disrupting their businesses, accounts and projects. They also overlook the speed with which digital ecosystems are blurring industry boundaries and shifting the competitive balance. What’s more, responding to digital by building new businesses and shifting resources away from old ones can be threatening to individual project managers and executives, who may therefore be slow to embrace the needed change.

In my experience, the only way for leaders to cut through inactivity is to take bold steps to understand below areas-

You should fight resistance to change. You should understand customer’s vision on digital journey through programmatic efforts. You should envisage strong digital approach by inspecting outcome as you go. And you should fight impossibility of knowing- a constant challenge given the simultaneous need to digitize your core and innovate with new business processes.

1. Resistance to change

Many project managers and senior executives aren’t fully fluent in what digital is, much less up to speed on the ways it can change how their businesses operate or the competitive context. That’s challenging. Project managers who aren’t acquainted with digital are much more likely to fall prey to the “shiny object” syndrome: investing in cool digital technologies without a clear understanding of how they will generate value in their own accounts/projects. They also are more likely to make fragmented, overlapping, or sub-scale digital investments; to pursue initiatives in the wrong order; or to skip foundational moves that would enable more advanced ones to pan out. Finally, this lack of grounding slows down the rate at which a business deploys new digital technologies. In an era of powerful first-mover advantages, winners routinely lead the pack in leveraging cutting-edge digital technologies at scale to pull further ahead. Having only a remedial understanding of trends and technologies has become dangerous.
